What Is Fluoride?

There has been some controversy over the years about fluoride, and it is true that too much fluoride can result in white spots on the teeth and bone problems. However, these issues arise after long-term exposure to very high levels of fluoride or as a result of getting too much fluoride as a child during the time when permanent teeth are developing.

Most dentists, however, will agree that the benefits of fluoride far outweigh any possible negative side effects. Fluoride helps to strengthen tooth enamel, the outer layer of the tooth. If tooth enamel is weakened, it can lead to cavities and tooth decay. Fluoride can also help to reduce bacteria and plaque on the teeth. Oral care products that are fluoride free can help to remove debris from teeth, but they don’t offer the extra layer of protection that products with fluoride do.

Fluoride is a naturally occuring mineral. It is found in groundwater, the ocean, and even in some foods (such as spinach, canned fish, and yams). For the past 70 years or so, it has also been added to drinking water supplies in about 75% of the country. Research shows that fluoride in drinking water doesn’t cause health issues; in fact, in areas without fluoridated water children are three times more likely to have serious dental problems.

If you are having dental issues, your dentist may recommend a fluoride treatment to help. This may be done in your dentist’s office and is simply a fluoride liquid, gel, or foam that is applied to teeth. Or, he or she may give you a prescription mouth rinse with a higher concentration of fluoride than what is available in over-the-counter products.
